///   The Inception of My World Travel Obsession

Maya Bay Beach of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand /// VinjatekLove. Infatuation. Obsession… Words that describe how I feel towards traveling the world as a way of life. The vagabond lifestyle.

Trust me, it’s paradise. This is where the hungry come to feed. For mine is a generation that circles the globe and searches for something we haven’t tried before. So never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It’s probably worth it.

Everyone gets stricken with wanderlust in a different way. Most are usually slowly afflicted over time like the long incubation period of rabies whereas I was instantly turned as if a zombie bit me right on the jugular.

It all started during a first date with a girl that shall not be named in the winter of 2000 in New York City while watching ‘The Beach’ at the cinema. Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Specifically the moment when Richard(DiCaprio) first walked onto the “Beach” and collapsed from awe and bliss – as if love at first sight struck like tender lightning. Watch the entire video but that starts at 2:15…

The entire movie oozes travel inspiration with the specificity of seeking then reaching paradise but it was at that exact moment that I figured out the purpose of my life, to travel the world. To find the beauty and wonders of this world as well as my own paradises… Especially that exact island and beach.

Visiting the Koh Phi Phi Islands, where filming took place for ‘The Beach’ became the very first thing on my bucket list and Maya Bay, the “Beach” the second.

Since then I’ve been there and back twice and a third is imminent. Despite the actual Beach (Maya Bay) being a now a popular tourist attraction (almost entirely because of the movie), it’s still one of the most beautiful and exotic bits of Earth there is.

The movie added some special effects; enclosing the entire beach with a wall of rock formations whereas the middle is open in real life. See below:

As you can see in my own photo of the real “Beach”, its stunning and beauty is retained. In fact it makes it look like a giant natural gateway to paradise.

The only downer is, everyone’s got the same idea. We all travel thousands of miles just to watch TV and check in to somewhere with all the comforts of home, and you gotta ask yourself, what is the point of that?

So this is where it all started.

The Beach is my favorite travel movie of all time, and evidently is also motivated me to travel as well.
