    A Life of Saturdays

From as early as childhood to even after having children of our own, Saturdays are often the most favored… so let’s make a life of them.

“You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred, that is.”

Imagine a gazebo haphazardly but charmingly made from the remnants of an old rowboat that spent its entire life flowing around the Gili Islands, Indonesia.

And in true paradise fashion, the islanders put that gazebo on a raft made from century year old palm trees and anchored it to a bungalow, now it floats just a few meters from the beach – an island tied to an island. In this cozy floating gazebo is a trippy 70’s themed couch of which Emma and I were chilling.

We were having a wonderfully cliche coconut drink. The kind of coconut that fell from the tree in the morning and we cut with a machete then shoved a straw in.

Drinking our nature’s perfect drink, I rhetorically said, “I wonder what day it is.” Emma chuckles with coconut bits flying out of her mouth then in a comically serious voice she replied, “I have no idea, more importantly, I don’t think I care. But it feels like a Saturday doesn’t it? You know, it’s hard to tell because it’s felt like this everyday since I started vagabonding with you.”

Smiling, I said, “Everyday is like a Saturday.”

A week later we ended up on a completely different kind of island, quite the opposite actually. From a bitty bit of land in the middle of the ocean with not a single motored vehicle to the country island metropolis of Singapore.

The contrast is obviously staggering but the “Saturday” feeling remained the same, mentality and all that.

While looking over the edge of the 57th story rooftop infinity pool of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, we were waiting for our overpriced “world class” piña coladas…

Emma sighs and said, “You know John, it’s Monday.” As we just flew into Singapore that morning, we both knew it was indeed a Monday. But remembering last week, I said, “No silly rabbit, it’s a Saturday.”

She splashes water at me then gives a confirming smile and muttered, “Another day, another Saturday.”

That’s what inspired me to pursue “a life of Saturdays” by way of wanderlust, hedonism and adventure.

    A Life of Saturdays.

“A life of saturdays” sounds like it would be a great book title! Anyways, thanks for the inspiring story.
