I come from the same professional background as you but I’m still active since and have no immediate plans to retire. But I don’t plan on being in this business forever, I want to get out while I’m still relatively young like you did. I want to get into the private sector or become a consulting contractor. So as a former operative, how do you find work?

I’m assuming you’ve just begun. You’ll make plenty of connections and resources to find work in the private sector, and there’s always demand for specialists.
So make good contacts throughout your career, because the best way to get hired in our line of work is through introductions and “underwriting”.
It’s dissimilar from finding “normal” jobs as it’s less about where to look and more about who you know.
Depending on your skillset and experience, you may even find something through conventional employment search methods such as online sites.
However, I myself have not tried to look for work. I’ve been very fortunate to have my former handler passing me contracts since my retirement.
