I wanted a dual-ammo multi-pump rifle because it’s versatile; you can pump it for softer shots, and get a good deal of power with 7-8 pumps (enough for a pellet to tear through 2 inches of hard cardboard and still kick up dirt on the other side).
The Winchester model 77XS that I received seems to be updated: it’s all black and Daisy, manufacturer, seems to have solved the problem of mold ridges on the stock, which on mine was nicely finished. I like the cut-away stock, which is a real plus, and I like the balance of the rifle, which doesn’t feel like a toy even though it’s pleasantly light weight.
The 77XS is an improved version of Daisy’s model 880, which has been time-tested for years. The small amount I paid extra for the 77XS -- given the nice included 4 x 32 scope and the well-designed cut-away stock -- was well worth it.
Some of the less-than-perfect things about the 77XS: The trigger is very frustratingly hard to pull (like Daisy’s model 880, about 7 lbs., compared with 2-3 lbs. on an easier-shooting rifle). Other people have complained about this, and I do, too! It makes it harder to shoot accurately when you have to strain to pull the trigger back. Also, the trigger has a very long pull, so it takes a while before you can squeeze off a shot. (Incidentally, there are suggestions online if you search for “Daisy 880 trigger modifications” to reduce the trigger pull, which I may someday follow when I have time.)
Another irritation, but more minor, is the safety, which takes a lot of finger strength to push from OFF to FIRE, or back again. Maybe it’s another one of Daisy’s “parental control” ideas! But it’s self-defeating, because it’s sufficiently hard enough to disengage the safety that I don’t want to put the safety back on again, even though I do. The safety push-through button has a strong spring-loaded ball bearing to keep it in place, and in spite of silicone grease that I put on the mechanism, it doesn’t help; the strength of the spring doesn’t seem to get any less through use.
A last comment: Don’t expect to sight in the rifle using BBs! The rifle shoots pretty accurately with pellets, but not with BBs. At 10 yards, and using a bench rest to sight in the rifle, I got all pellets within a 1-2 inch area of the target. But with BBs, once the rifle was sighted in, they hit the target in a random 10 inch spread! Others have complained about the model 880’s accuracy with BBs, and I agree.
But weighing the good with the bad, I still think this is a very good purchase for the money, and am giving it 5 stars in spite of its obvious shortcomings. I don’t think there is a better rifle with its features for this price.
With five pumps the pellet doesn't travel through the game; all energy is expelled inside the bird, they fall over like tin cans. Ten pumps puts the pellet through the body and both doves and pigeons fly away and die somewhere else; a waste of meat. I wanted a low velocity rifle with variable selection power; I got just what I wanted. My back yard is 10 yards deep and 20 yards wide (small area) with a rock wall for stopping thru and thru pellets; after bouncing off the dirt, given my aim angle to the birds.
I haven't been able to get the accuracy I was hoping for; however, I can't blame that on the rifle because I've only put Gamo Rocket .177 pellets thru it. In addition, I'm new to firing pellets, not sure how to determine which pellet will seal better in my barrel than others. Persons I've spoken with have stated, alloy pellets seal better and give truer more consistent flight paths from the barrel; I have a full can of Rockets and will finish this can before trying another brand--which will be alloy.
Target bullet pattern was shot at 32 feet inside my house using my hallway to eliminate outside wind effect on the flight of the Gamo .177 Rocket, 9.6grs. Since the distance length of my hallway and the target point to the birds in my back yard is almost the same I decided to use this hallway distance to sight in the scope that came with the rifle. Scope is adequate for my needs; and, was very easy to sight in given the instructions included with the rifle.
I will post another evaluation of accuracy for this rifle after I shoot alloy pellets. PS....I love how light and easy this rifle is to use.
Lastly; don't be concerned about the loading area of this rifle, it isn't meant to be a quick fire rifle. I use tweezers to load the pellet for two reasons. 1.) Lead pellets have a seem along their body where the mold comes together; for accuracy, I put this seem in the same place for each shot. 2.) The magnetic tip on the bolt pulls the pellet (bb) into the chambering area; given the nature of the .177 Gamo Rocket, 9.6grs this magnet tries to turn the (bb) end of the pellet into the bolt face rather than allowing the pellet to slip over the bolt and feeding into the chamber. It really isn't a problem unless you can't use your brain to overcome the issue?
